Visitors to the Gulf Incentives, Business Travel and Meetings Exhibition (GIBTM) today were met with a bustling environment teeming with crowds of like-minded professionals looking to take advantage of the event’s educational and networking opportunities. Held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) from March 26-28, GIBTM broadened its range this year with the introduction of new initiatives and a marked increase of visiting delegates from around the world. This includes local businesses from Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah that are renowned for being key vendors of incentives, business travel and meetings services in the region. GIBTM is considered a major event both locally and internationally, attracting global attention to the incentives, business travel and meetings industry.
Standing out from the crowd was Turkey’s stand, having tripled its space in comparison to its initial participation in 2009 with 12 major Turkish purveyors participating this year, including Turkish Airlines, the Istanbul Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Antalya Convention Bureau, and the Istanbul Congress Center. Turkey has proven itself to be a hot spot for global congress travel year after year, its central destinations being Ankara, Antalya, Bodrum, Cappadocia, Isanbul, Izmir, Konya, and Marmaris. Top international events such as the Geothermal Congress, the Universiade, a NATO summit, Formula One Race and the Champions League Final have taken place in Turkey, with many others joining their ranks in rapid succession.
On the other hand, The 23rd Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF), taking place from March 28th – April 2nd at ADNEC, also witnessed a strong Turkish attendance, with its stand featuring the biggest names in Turkish publishing, including the Association of Turkish Authors, the Turkish Association of Press & Publishing, and Timas Yayinevi. Turkey has a long history of globally recognized authors and playwrights, with its roots in literature running as far back as the Ottoman Empire. Presently, Turkey publishes thousands of books and miscellaneous publications per year in its native language, with thousands more being translated into different languages and distributed worldwide.
Turkey’s continued presence at both GIBTM and the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair grows greater year by year, and is infused with the hues of Turkey’s rich culture and heritage. Turkey has become a leading world travel destination due to its centralized location as well as a vast array of activities and attractions, lending itself to a wide variety of tastes and budgets. It is seeking to develop a broader tourism outlook to ensure healthy and sustainable development. In line with world tourism trends, it is adopting a new strategy to promote tourism offerings based on the Education-Entertainment-Environment concept instead of the Sun-Sea-Sand triangle. It plans to utilize its untapped tourism potential by diversifying into new areas such as golf, yachting, thermal, winter, M.I.C.E (meetings + incentives + conventions + exhibitions), and faith tourism. It is therefore no surprise that Turkey has won numerous local and international tourism awards, as well as become a must-visit destination on many a traveller’s wish list.
