Over 100 Papers To Be Presented By Uae Eye Specialists At Prestigious International Congress

Abu Dhabi, 27 December 2011: Leading UAE-based ophthalmologists will present over 100 papers at the World Ophthalmology Congress 2012 (WOC2012), being held in Abu Dhabi in February, to highlight key clinical and scientific issues to an international audience of peers. WOC 2012, which will run at Abu Dhabi National Convention Centre (ADNEC) 16 – 20 February 2012, is the 33rd International Congress of Ophthalmology bringing together a truly international audience to explore insights into the latest ophthalmology technologies and trends.

The papers will explore a range of ophthalmology subspecialties, from cornea and anterior eye diseases to retina, cataract, glaucoma, refractive surgery and paediatric ophthalmology.

“The level of local participation is remarkable as this is the first time that Abu Dhabi will host a medical meeting of this magnitude - WOC 2012 is the longest continuous international medical meeting - and the first time that we have witnessed such an increase in the number of scientific papers submitted by UAE-based ophthalmologists,” said Dr. Manal Taryam, Vice President of WOC2012.

“The Middle East’s ophthalmology discipline has seen huge advances in recent years and the congress will play a significant role in developing and enhancing the skills of UAE-based doctors and enriching their knowledge through access to the latest research, developments and new technologies. Local education on new techniques ultimately brings patients state-of-the-art technology and care.”

The Congress is an international platform for scientific communication and innovation. Its in-depth scientific programme covers 35 subspecialty and topic areas in ophthalmology and eye health. Over 45 sessions have been organised by International Council of Ophthalmology (IOC) members and participating societies, these represent all IOC-affiliated regional and international societies. In total, 500 scientific sessions have been organised to deliver the latest updates in eye health by more than 2,000 internationally recognised speakers.

The scientific programme will be accompanied by an industry exhibition which includes over 150 local, regional and international organisations showcasing the latest innovations in the field of ophthalmology and related products and services.

WOC 2012 is being hosted by the Middle East Africa Council of Ophthalmology (MEACO), which represents the national and sub regional ophthalmological societies in Africa and the Middle East including Turkey and Iran.
